Summary of the activity
The Center for Immunology and Infectious Diseases (Cimi) is a joint research unit created in 2014 and affiliated with Sorbonne University, Inserm and CNRS. The Cimi is located on the campus of the Faculty of Medicine of Sorbonne University on the site of the Pitié-Salpêtrière in Paris. This location creates a strong dynamic of exchanges between the research teams and the hospital services. Approximately 150 people work at the Cimi, including researchers, teachers, technical and research support staff. Research at the Cimi explores immune system functions and host-pathogen interactions, and seeks to develop new therapeutic strategies in the field of immunology and infectious diseases. Themes: immunology, inflammation, immuno-oncology, microbiology, host-pathogen interactions, antibiotic resistance, vaccinology.

Chemokines, Phagocytes and Inflammation
The work of our team focuses on the origin and function of myeloid cells in infectious diseases and cancer. The aim is to decipher the regulation of pro- and anti-inflammatory activities delivered by these cells of the innate immune system.

Immune microenvironment and immunotherapy
Vaccinology is a multidisciplinary field that is now progressing towards the discovery of early biomarkers of vaccine efficacy in order to accelerate vaccine development. Humoral responses are considered to be markers of effective immune responses for protection, but these responses are detected months after vaccination.

Immunoregulation and Therapy of Autoimmune Diseases and Cancer
We specialize in the study of CD4+Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) in mice, humanized mice and humans, and of certain cytokines. We are working on the role of metabolism, co-stimulatory/co-inhibitory signals, IL-12 and TNF family cytokines and novel markers of Tregs in the control of autoimmune diseases and cancers.

Immunopathogenesis of viral infections and immune aging
We perform comparative studies of immunological and inflammatory attributes in settings with signs of immune aging, including advanced age, certain viral infections, and reduced thymic activity.

Signaling and Pathogenesis
Research on the activation and regulation of the immune system is carried out at the molecular and cellular level, but also by using animal models and by studying clinical situations. Because of its homology with NEMO (essential modulator of the NF-B pathway), our studies on the NF-B pathway led us to focus on Optineurin which is involved in autophagy/Mitophagy. By integrating dynamics, structure, and cellular and molecular biology, we address fundamental questions about how fungal infections are initiated and lead to disease.

Immunity, infection and cancer of NK& T cells
Through conventional and innovative approaches, we are interested in unraveling the role of innate (NK cells) and adaptive (T cells) cellular immunity in different human pathologies (viral infections, autoimmune and psychiatric diseases or cancer) in close collaboration with clinical services.

Immunity, infection and cancer of NK& T cells
We have been studying for many years the immune response directed against viruses, recently against SARSCov2, or that associated with autoimmunity or immune deficiencies. We postulate that antibodies targeting autoantigens (active as specific competitors), or used to redirect regulatory T cells could represent new forms of personalized therapies.

Immunity & microbial ecology
Initial colonization of the human intestine. We study the interactions between environmental exposure, gut microbiota and host immunity to understand the homeostasis of healthy gut microbiota and human pathophysiology. Our objective is to decipher the role of adaptive immunity on the homeostasis of the intestinal microbiota, with a particular focus on microbiota-specific immunoglobulin A (immuno-microbiota).

Emergence and spread of multidrug resistance to antibiotics
Our team seeks to understand the mechanisms of emergence and diffusion of bacterial multidrug resistance to antibiotics, particularly in mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), and enterobacteria, including Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP).

Biology and immunology of malaria
Our research aims at elucidating the fundamental aspects of the infection of the liver by Plasmodium, the agent of malaria, in order to identify and validate new vaccine and drug targets. Building on our expertise in sporozoite and liver stage biology and our discovery of host and parasite factors that play a key role in infection, we are developing projects exploring the mechanisms of sporozoite entry, development of liver forms and hypnozoite formation, gene regulation during transmission, and immunity to liver stages of infection
