The OECI awards the European “Comprehensive Cancer Center” label of excellence to the AP-HP Sorbonne University Cancer Institute

On 16 June 2023, the AP-HP Sorbonne University Cancer Institute, which oversees the cancer care, research and teaching activities of the AP-HP Sorbonne University hospital group (which includes the Charles-Foix, Pitié-Salpêtrière, Saint-Antoine, Rothschild, Tenon, Trousseau and La Roche-Guyon hospitals) and Sorbonne University, was awarded the label “University Cancer Institute” at the Oncology Days 2023 in Paris. Comprehensive Cancer Center “issued by the OECI – Organisation of European Cancer Institute. This European accreditation, awarded for 5 years, rewards the commitment and quality of work of the teams involved in the care of cancer patients.

Every year, the IUC teams offer personalised care to more than 16,000 patients of all ages, for all types of cancer. They implement the full range of care procedures and are involved at every stage of the cancer journey, from cancer risk assessment (through the risk management platform) and fertility preservation to post-cancer care. This comprehensive and coordinated care means that the IUC can be considered a “comprehensive cancer centre”.

Accreditation as a Comprehensive Cancer Centre thanks to the mobilisation of all the teams

The collective effort to prepare for this visit included a self-assessment by the 90 teams involved, followed by a visit by OECI auditors to ensure that practices were in line with OECI requirements in terms of the quality of overall patient care.

This accreditation recognises the commitment of all those involved in the fight against cancer, and commits us to continuing our efforts to achieve excellence in the fight against these diseases. “Prof. Joseph Gligorov, Director of the Institut Universitaire de Cancérologie AP-HP.Sorbonne Université.

All the hospitals in the AP-HP.Sorbonne University hospital group have been certified by the French National Authority for Health (HAS).

Implemented by the Haute Autorité de Santé every four years, the evaluation procedure for health care institutions aims to assess the quality and safety of care and all practices delivered by hospitals and clinics in France. It is carried out by expert visitors, health professionals mandated and trained by the Haute Autorité de Santé.

Nearly 340 assessments were carried out at the seven hospitals (Pitié-Salpêtrière, Saint-Antoine, Tenon, Rothschild, Trousseau, Charles-Foix and La Roche Guyon).

A number of strong points were cited at the end of the various visits, for all the hospitals, such as the involvement of patients and their families in their care, the promotion of good treatment, practices that guarantee patient dignity, and the consideration given to precariousness and living conditions.

The surveyors also praised initiatives to improve teamwork and quality of life at work, the participation and contribution of user representatives, and the development of city-hospital partnerships. They also cited the management of exceptional health situations, vital emergencies and team training as very positive points.

Suggestions for improvement included analyzing patient satisfaction and informing them of some of their rights.

Each visit by the Haute Autorité de Santé’s visiting experts took place over four or five days between May and November 2022. The majority of clinical and medico-technical departments in the seven hospitals were audited by the expert visitors during this procedure focused on professional practices.

The Saint-Antoine and Rothschild hospitals have been awarded the ” High Quality of Care ” label, the highest level of certification provided by the HAS. The Pitié-Salpêtrière, Tenon, Trousseau, Charles-Foix and La Roche Guyon hospitals have been certified ” quality of care confirmed “, with compliance rates of between 93% and 95%.

These results testify to the commitment of our teams to patients and the quality of care provided in the hospitals of the AP-HP.Sorbonne University hospital group.

The certification reports can be consulted on the website of the Haute Autorité de Santé.

6th IFODS (International and French Oncology Days): 14-16 June 2023

You can consult the pre-programme here

The IFODS Congress, in partnership with the St Paul’s courses and many learned societies, is today fully situated as a transversal and French-speaking congress of oncology, which wishes to take care in particular of its juniors by ensuring them a training of excellence, facilitated by the presence and the availability of very didactic speakers.

Gradually, this congress is being enriched with several new assets:

  1. The support of the INCa, precisely in this training approach, especially for interns.
  2. Obtaining ASCO approval to officially organise the “Post ASCO or ASCO in a day” all day event on 16 June 2023;
  3. The presence of numerous specialties that join us: neuro-oncology, haematology, oncogeriatrics, oncopediatrics.
  4. A full day now dedicated to the cancer innovation ecosystem
  5. A future-oriented vision, with 4 sessions on the theme of artificial intelligence, in all its aspects.
  6. A space dedicated to young oncologists (AERIO, SFjRO and interns of specialties), who will organize several sessions dedicated to their practice, which is evolving, and will benefit from a total coverage to come and attend the 3 days of the congress, thanks to the support of the INCA, the SFC and UNICANCER

We sincerely hope that there will be a large number of participants at this congress, which has a real vocation to become the national congress of cancerology, providing training for the youngest but also for all the professionals involved in cancerology.

We rely heavily on your support to promote IFODS within the IUC

Solid and haematological malignancies – JACIE accreditation

The IUC AP-HP Sorbonne University offers multidisciplinary care for solid and haematological malignancies at all ages. In order to ensure the quality and safety of these highly specialised activities, several clinical departments have committed themselves to a quality process of excellence and international recognition of the skills of the teams involved: JACIE* accreditation.

JACIE accreditation currently covers four clinical services that have been involved in the quality accreditation process for almost 10 years:

  • Clinical haematology – Haemobiotherapy at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital
  • Clinical haematology and cell therapy at the Saint-Antoine Hospital
  • Paediatric haematology oncology at the Armand-Trousseau Hospital
  • Medical Oncology and Cellular Therapy at Tenon Hospital

The JACIE programme contributes to the harmonisation and improvement of clinical and medico-technical practices necessary to master the different stages of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (donor selection and management, stem cell harvesting, preparation/processing of cell therapy products, graft reinjection, recipient follow-up and clinical research data management)

The JACIE standard places particular emphasis on the importance of maintaining the know-how and therefore the skills of medical and non-medical staff. The level of annual activity (number of transplants), the number of staff with specific skills and the experience of the teams in the field of transplantation are all indispensable criteria for claiming this JACIE accreditation.

The JACIE programme requires the implementation of a quality management plan, the ultimate objective of which is the control of risk and the continuous improvement of practices in order to guarantee the quality of patient care. This programme involves other players inside and outside the hospital (pharmacy (chemotherapy, etc.), medical biology laboratory, cell therapy unit, pharmaceutical laboratory for innovative treatments (CAR-T cells), etc.) whose collaboration methods are regularly reviewed and improved.

Like all the actions undertaken by the AP-HP SU IUC, the objective of this accreditation process is to make constant progress in the fight against cancer for patients and their families.

* : JACIE signifie Joint Accreditation Committee for ISCT Europe et EBMT. This is a system set up by two learned societies: the European branch of the International Society for Cell Therapy (ISCT), and the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT).

Renewal of the SiRIC label for CURAMUS

Congratulations to the entire SIRIC Curamus team, led by Prof. Marc Sanson, which has just obtained the renewal of the label for the period 2023-2027. The objective: to participate in a better knowledge and management of cancers.

This “integrated cancer research site” label, awarded by INCa in partnership with Inserm and the General Directorate for Healthcare Services (DGOS), is intended to finance excellent translational cancer research projects.

The relabeling builds on the knowledge already acquired and allows us to take a new step by developing new programs:

  • Program 1

Brain, cancer and immunity – cellular dialogue in brain tumors
coordinated by Dr Mehdi Touat and Dr Marie-Caroline Dieu-Nosjean

  • Program 2

Rare and aggressive hematological cancers in their ecosystem
coordinated by Pr Florence Nguyen-Khac and Dr Vincent Vieillard

  • Program 3

    Microsatellite instability and cancer
coordinated by Pr Alex Duval and Dr Florence Renaud

These programs aim at a better understanding of the genetics and the immune microenvironment of these tumors, the development of personalized treatments and an improvement in the patient’s journey and quality of life. They will be complemented by cross-disciplinary expertise, notably in artificial intelligence with the participation of Prof. Xavier Tannier and in medical humanities with the interdisciplinary research group in medical humanities led by Prof. Karine Berthelot-Guiet.

At the same time, a CURAMUS patient and caregiver committee has been created. Their experience and expertise are a real added value.

This label is a recognition of the excellence of the CURAMUS project and also a recognition of the expertise of the research conducted within AP-HP.Sorbonne University and Sorbonne University in conjunction with the University Institute of Cancerology (IUC).

Certification by the High Authority for Health (HAS)

Evaluation of health care facilities

Implemented by the Haute Autorité de Santé every four years, the evaluation procedure for health care institutions aims to assess the quality and safety of care and all practices delivered by hospitals and clinics in France. It is carried out by expert visitors, health professionals mandated and trained by the Haute Autorité de Santé.

The hospitals of the AP-HP.Sorbonne University hospital group (Rothschild, Trousseau, La Roche-Guyon, Saint-Antoine, Charles-Foix, Pitié-Salpêtrière and Tenon) were visited by the visiting experts between May and November.

The results were delivered in early November for hospitals that received a visit from visiting experts before the summer.

Thus, hospitals :

  • Rothschild and Saint-Antoine were certified with the “High Quality of Care” mention, the highest level of certification awarded by the Haute Autorité de Santé.
  • Charles-Foix, La Roche-Guyon, Trousseau, Pitié Salpêtrière and Tenon have been certified with the “Quality of care confirmed” label

These results testify to the involvement of the teams with patients and the quality of care within the hospitals of the AP-HP.Sorbonne University hospital group.

The certification reports can be consulted on the website of the Haute Autorité de Santé.

Understanding Cancer Centre” labeling process

For several months now, the AP-HP Sorbonne University Cancer Institute has been involved in the “Comprehensive Cancer Centre” labeling process issued by the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI).

The OECI is a European organization that certifies centers of excellence in cancer.

This accreditation procedure examines the entire multidisciplinary approach of a center, integrating care, teaching and research. Only institutions with a significant number of medical and technical skills, including clinical and translational research, and a high level of quality of care are eligible for accreditation.

This distinction, obtained for a period of 5 years, would allow the development of new research projects and new interactions at the European level aimed at promoting therapeutic innovation for the benefit of cancer patients.

The final labelling process requires a few more months of exchange and interaction with the auditors to achieve this goal.

A virtual visit is scheduled for April 28 with the visiting experts of the OECI.
