SiRIC CANCER – Curamus

Summary of the activity

Cancer United Research Associating Medicine, University & Society. Curamus is one of the eight integrated cancer research sites (SiRIC Cancer), accredited by the French National Cancer Institute (INCa), the Ministry of Solidarity and Health, Inserm and the AVIESAN Cancer ITMO (National Alliance for Life Sciences and Health). The SIRIC Curamus aims to bring together and promote the synergy of its multidisciplinary teams around the university hospital group AP-HP.SORBONNE UNIVERSITY in order to accelerate research and innovation in oncology to improve care for patients. Curamus is supported by the AP-HP.Sorbonne University hospital group and by the three faculties of Medicine, Science-Engineering and Arts of Sorbonne University under the federation of the Institut Universitaire de Cancérologie (IUC), in association with their institutional partners, Inserm and the CNRS.

Neuro-oncology

Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death before the age of 35. Because of their rarity, their great heterogeneity, and their frequent resistance to conventional treatments, they remain poorly known. The main objectives of this program are to:

  • Better understand the functional genomics and the role of the tumor microenvironment
  • Improve diagnosis through innovative and/or non-invasive approaches
  • Develop personalized therapies and improve the quality of life of patients.

Rare immuno-hematological cancers

Rare immunohematological cancers include pediatric leukemias, cancers of immunocompromised patients (transplant recipients or HIV carriers) which are insufficiently studied and excluded from clinical research protocols. The main objectives of this program are to:

  • To characterize at the genomic and immunogenomic level these rare tumors and to explore the interactions of the host and tumor microenvironment.
  • Develop innovative diagnostic tools that predict progression.
  • Implement innovative therapies and procedures for monitoring long-term effects in rare adult and pediatric tumors.

Cancers with Microsatellite Instability (MSI)

Cancers with instability of DNA microsatellite repeats (MSI) are a frequent family of tumors, associated with many locations (colon, stomach, endometrium, pancreas, prostate, lung, breast, ovary, brain,…). The main objectives of this program, dedicated to MSI cancers of all locations, are:

  • To understand the processes underlying MSI tumor initiation and progression and shaping the microenvironment of these cancers.
  • To develop new diagnostic tools and therapeutic regimens adapted to their modern management by an emerging precision medicine (immunotherapy, immune checkpoint inhibitors).

Medical Humanities

The Human and Social Sciences axis brings together, on the one hand, philosophers, sociologists and researchers in information and communication sciences, whose objective is to propose :

  • Critical reflections on concepts that are at the forefront of the SiRIC project, such as “health democracy” and “expert patients”; “rare cancers”; “healing”; or “predictive” or “personalized” medicine.
  • A multidisciplinary work and approach on the meaning, understanding and use of these concepts, in order to shed light on the role they play and their various implications.

Societal Program: Life After Cancer

Patient representatives from users, patient associations and the University of Patients are taking part in SiRIC CURAMUS to highlight the societal aspects of life during and after the disease. In particular, SiRIC CURAMUS is lobbying the AERAS convention to have diseases included in the AERAS reference grid. This facilitates access to loan guarantees and therefore to bank loans.
